چکیده

Fe-N-C materials are promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts for replacing expensive platinum-based (Pt/C) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, they still show low volumetric activity and stability compared to Pt/C catalysts, with carbon corrosion being one of the main factors loss active Fe-Nx sites. Within this study, phosphoric acid-activated rye straw coconut shells revealed as a matrix sites advanced against electrochemical (5000 cycles, 1.0–1.5 VRHE, 0.1 M HClO4) common catalyst based on black. Electrochemical characterization two biomass-based (Fe-N-CBio) shows hand 50% higher terms mass well comparable site density but other lower selectivity toward four-electron ORR than catalyst. Nitrite stripping experiments acetate buffer an electrolyte display 1.5-fold stronger effect carboxylic acid adsorption catalyst, revealing differences electronic structure Fe-N-CBio This difference is mainly attributed presence phosphor species amounts nitrogen functionalities catalysts. The P assumed stabilize by inhibiting electron withdrawal from C. study points out impact further application activated biomasses more stable sustainable ORR.

Electrospun interconnected Fe-N/C nanofiber networks as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in acidic media

One-dimensional electrospun nanofibers have emerged as a potential candidate for high-performance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. However, contact resistance among the neighbouring nanofibers hinders the electron transport. Here, we report the preparation of interconnected Fe-N/C nanofiber networks (Fe-N/C NNs) with low electrical resistance via electrospinning followed by maturing a...

Particle size dependence on oxygen reduction reaction activity of electrodeposited TaO(x) catalysts in acidic media.

The size dependence of the oxygen reduction reaction activity was studied for TaO(x) nanoparticles electrodeposited on carbon black for application to polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). Compared with a commercial Ta2O5 material, the ultrafine oxide nanoparticles exhibited a distinctively high onset potential different from that of the bulky oxide particles.

N-doped carbon nanomaterials are durable catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in acidic fuel cells

The availability of low-cost, efficient, and durable catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a prerequisite for commercialization of the fuel cell technology. Along with intensive research efforts of more than half a century in developing nonprecious metal catalysts (NPMCs) to replace the expensive and scarce platinum-based catalysts, a new class of carbon-based, low-cost, metal-free O...

Structure of Fe−Nx−C Defects in Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts from First-Principles Modeling

The structure of active sites in Fe-based nonprecious metal oxygen reduction reaction catalysts remains unknown, limiting the ability to follow a rational design paradigm for catalyst improvement. Previous studies indicate that N-coordinated Fe defects at graphene edges are the most stable such sites. Density functional theory is used for determination of stable potential oxygen reduction react...
